The Story of the Cabin

Long before there was a cabin, there was a boy in the woods.

Chris grew up on this land, spending his days wandering the forest, following the creek, and building the kind of quiet connection to place that only comes from time and imagination. Somewhere in those early years, a simple idea took hold—someday, there would be a cabin here.

That “someday” arrived more than 40 years ago.

At just 18 years old, Chris and a group of friends began turning that idea into something real. They worked with what the land provided—cutting trees from the forest, stripping the bark by hand, and stacking each log carefully into place. There were no shortcuts. Just long days, shared effort, and the kind of determination that comes from building something together.

Log by log, the cabin took shape—crafted from American White Pine, with a porch of Red Pine, rooted in the very ground it stands on. What began as a dream became a structure built not just with tools, but with friendships, stories, and a sense of purpose. Even today, you can still see the marks of those early hands in the wood.
Over the years, the cabin has lived many lives.

It has been a hunting cabin, a gathering place for friends, and a quiet refuge for those who simply needed a roof and a place to rest. It has welcomed people in moments of celebration and in times when life felt uncertain—always offering the same thing: shelter, warmth, and a sense of peace.

Some of the most meaningful moments are woven into its walls.

Chris and Beth, your hosts, held their wedding reception here, surrounded by family, friends, and the land that had already given them so much. And for more than 25 years, the cabin has been home to an annual tradition—the pumpkin carving party, where laughter, hayrides, and haunted night hikes fill the woods with life and memory.

There is also a quieter, lasting story behind the design.

The cabin was created by a young aspiring architect, John Jessup, whose life was tragically cut short. This cabin remains the only structure he ever designed that was brought into the world—a piece of his vision that endures in timber and light.

Today, the cabin stands as more than a place to stay.

It is a place shaped by time, by people, and by the land itself. A place where mornings begin with mist in the valley, where evenings gather around a fire, and where, for a little while, you can step into a slower rhythm and make a few memories of your own.
